NEW DELHI: Bhupender Yadav, the union environment minister, said on Friday that India has made a concerted effort to meet the goals it set at the UN climate summit in 2015 to combat climate change.
Launching the 'Hariyali Mahotsav' in New Delhi, he said India has set an example before the world of how careful use of natural resources can make the planet green.
Despite having 17 percent of the world's population, India only contributes 4 percent of the world's carbon emissions, said the minister.
India has made great efforts to meet the 175 GW renewable capacity goal set in Paris in 2015. (climate conference). By 2030, we now want to boost renewable energy capacity to 500 gigawatts," he said.
Union Minister of State for Environment, the current generation is facing difficulties due to the exploitation in natural resources. He said, India's per-capita emissions are half a tonne, compared to the global average of four tonnes. Therefore, "we are not to blame for climate change, but we have accepted the challenge to fight it."
India is home to all Asiatic lions, 60% of tigers, and elephants. "We have 32 national elephant reserves and 52 national tiger reserves." He added that everyone supported the ban on single-use plastics that went into effect on July 1. The purpose of the Hariyali Mahotsav is to raise awareness of the value of trees and vegetation. The campaign includes planting initiatives at 75 urban woods, 75 km of roadways surrounding 75 police stations, 75 Delhi-area schools, and 75 degraded locations worldwide.
