New Delhi: The INDIAN and Russia have given the green signal to a big deal to make the state-of-the-art AK-203 rifles in India. The AK-203 Rifle is the latest and most upgraded model of the AK-47 rifle. It will replace the 'Indion Small Orms System' (INSAS) rifle. The Indian Army requires 770,000 AK-203 rifles, out of which one lakh will be imported and the remaining rifles will be manufactured in India.

These rifles will be manufactured under The India-Russia Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL), a joint venture in India. According to media reports, the Russian weapon of 7.62 times 39 mm will be manufactured at the Korwa Ordnance Factory in Uttar Pradesh, which was inaugurated by PM Modi last year. According to the news, the cost per rifle is expected to be around $1,100, including technology transfer costs and the establishment of a manufacturing unit.

Let us tell you that the Insas rifles are being used from 1996. There are problems like jamming, magazine snags in high places on the Himalayan mountains. The state-of-the-art AK-203 rifle will be lighter than the insas in weight. While INSAS weighs 4.25 kg, the AK-203 weighs four kg. In Insas, where there are 20 bullets, russian rifles have 30 bullet magazines. The AK-203 is far better in terms of trigger catching and pressing. It will target 100 per cent over a radius of 400 metres. Its accuracy is even higher. This rifle can shoot 600 bullets in a minute, i.e., ten bullets per second.
