NEW DELHI: An Indian student from Bangalore has earned a coveted scholarship of 5,000 pounds that is given to an undergraduate student at the University of Dundee in the UK who is enrolled in any of the 24 subjects available.

The 2022 Jainti Dass Saggar Memorial Scholarship for Excellence will go to Rajvir Singh, an 18-year-old University of Dundee student studying psychology and french. This scholarship is intended to help students who want to give back to their community.

The award, which is presented to one aspirant student from India each year, is named in honour of Jainti Dass Saggar, a doctor and Scotland's first non-white elected politician, who travelled all the way from Punjab to study at the University more than a century ago.

Saggar went on to use his medical education to help transform the lives of people living in the city of Dundee, and served as the city councillor for 18 years.

Singh, who expressed his "gratefulness" for receiving the grant, explained that his decision to enrol in the programme was motivated by his own experiences with mental health.

"Due to my own struggles with mental health, like many others, I decided to major in psychology. In India, there is support accessible, but there is a lot of societal shame attached to it. I'm grateful beyond measure for receiving the Saggar Scholarship "Singh stated sternly.

I want to use my degree to become a therapist so I can provide others with the kind of assistance I didn't always receive, he continued.

Singh has also received the Global Success Scholarship, worth 6,000 pounds annually, which is offered to students who have come from other countries to study in the UK and who demonstrate excellence in their academic pursuits.

"Psychology is particularly well-developed in the UK. I wanted to study in the UK since the BPS (British Psychological Society) approved programmes are some of the best in the world " he added.
