Johannesburg: Without a doubt, Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored India's pivotal role in global economic growth during his address at the BRICS Business Forum Leaders' Dialogue in Johannesburg on Tuesday. This visit comes as part of his participation in the 15th BRICS Leaders' Summit hosted in South Africa.
The prime minister unequivocally stated that India is poised to serve as a driving force for global growth. Despite the prevailing challenges in the world economy, India has emerged as the swiftest expanding major economy, as noted by Modi.
He expounded upon his administration's accomplishments in implementing transformative measures such as the enactment of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code and the establishment of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). These reforms have been instrumental in enhancing the business environment's efficiency and fostering greater investor confidence. Furthermore, Modi highlighted the strides made in leveraging technology to enhance public service delivery and curbing instances of corruption. Notably, he emphasized that direct benefit transfers exceeding $360 billion have been disbursed to citizens.
Modi also acknowledged the accomplishments of the UPI (Unified Payments Interface) system, showcasing its international collaborations. In this context, he proposed potential partnerships with fellow BRICS nations to bolster UPI's reach.
Turning his attention to India's thriving startup ecosystem, advancements in gender parity, and the nation's ambitious 'Make in India' campaign, Modi painted a comprehensive picture of India's multifaceted progress.
Sharing the stage with him were President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and President Lula da Silva of Brazil. While President Xi Jinping of China was not present at the business forum event, President Vladimir Putin of Russia was scheduled to participate virtually in the BRICS Summit.
