Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Vice Chief of the Indian Navy, announced that the INS Brahmaputra, an indigenous frigate that has tilted to one side after a fire broke out onboard, can be righted and assessed for damage. He also mentioned that a sailor, who went missing after the fire on Sunday, was last seen walking out of the ship, and efforts to locate him are ongoing.

The Navy stated that the fire started on the evening of July 21 while the multi-role frigate was undergoing refit at Naval Dockyard Mumbai. The blaze was controlled by the ship's crew with assistance from dockyard firefighters and other nearby vessels by Monday morning. Despite their efforts, the ship experienced severe listing to the port side and could not be stabilized.

The large volume of water used to extinguish the fire may have disrupted the ship's balance, causing it to tilt and rest against the jetty. Vice Admiral Swaminathan reassured that the ship could be righted once the water is pumped out, allowing a full damage assessment.

Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi visited the Mumbai naval dockyard two days after the incident to review the damage. He discussed the next steps for repairing the warship and assessed the situation with naval officials. The Navy confirmed that all personnel, except for one junior sailor, have been accounted for. An inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the accident.
