THERAN: The death of a teenage girl who was allegedly killed in protest over the custodial death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini has been the subject of an investigation by Iran's judiciary.

Since Amini's death on 16 September, unrest has spread across Iran, following the arrest by Tehran's ethics police for allegedly breaking the Islamic Republic's strict dress code for women. She was reportedly not following the rules.

Several people, mostly protesters but also security personnel, have been killed as a result of street violence.
Tehran prosecutor Ali Salehi was quoted by the official IRNA news agency late Tuesday as saying that "a case has been registered in the criminal court to investigate the cause of the death of Nika Shkrami."

He said that an inquiry has been ordered into the matter and necessary steps are being taken in this regard.
400 protesters were released from prison, the prosecutor had previously claimed, "on condition not to repeat their actions."
But he insisted that "those acting against national security" would face punishment "decisive, severe and without leniency".
