Jaishankar says, 'Government expresses opposition to Sri Lanka over death of four Indian fishermen'

New Delhi: The Central Government said in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that the issue of the death of four Indian fishermen was placed before Sri Lanka in January and India has lodged strict diplomatic opposition in this regard. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has given this information in response to supplementary questions during the Question Hour in the Upper House.

He said that according to the information available, on 18 January 2021, four fishermen were killed when a boat belonging to Indian fishermen and a Sri Lankan Navy collided with each other. He said that the Indian High Commissioner had lodged a strong protest with the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister about the incident. Strict diplomatic protest was also lodged before the Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka here in New Delhi.

He said that Sri Lanka has ordered an inquiry into the incident and its report is awaited. He said that currently there is no Indian fisherman in Sri Lankan custody. Jaishankar said that the government gives the highest priority to the safety of Indian fishermen and that matters related to Indian fishermen are taken up at the highest levels. He said that the subject was also discussed during his visit to Sri Lanka in January.
