SRINAGAR :  Landslides and shooting stones have caused the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway to be closed to vehicular traffic, officials reported on Wednesday.

The Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police reported that the Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) was stopped at several spots because of mudslides, landslides, and stone-firing incidents. According to officials, restoration work on the highway is ongoing, and the Mughal Road and SSG Road are open for vehicular traffic.

The main transportation link that connects Kashmir with the rest of the nation and provides the Kashmir valley with its only means of survival is the highway.  Trucks carrying supplies for Kashmir and other vehicles travel along the roadway.

On June 22 of last month, it was also reported that landslides had caused the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway to be closed to traffic, when Mughal road was closed due to a landslide at Poshana.

The Jammu and Kashmir traffic police urged people from using the route until traffic checking units had verified that it was safe to do so.

"Commuters are advised not to travel on Jammu-Srinagar NHW road without confirming the status of road from TCU Jammu/Srinagar."
