NEW DELHI: Amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia met with Indian students awaiting planes at Bucharest airport on Wednesday, assuring them of a swift return to India.

Scindia, one of four ministers who arrived in Bucharest as the government's special envoy to manage the evacuation of Indian students, told the medical students from Maharashtra who were waiting at the airport that every support would be provided. He told students that four flights will depart from there, each carrying over 1,000 students.

"At the Bucharest Airport, I met and spoke with Indian students who were waiting for their flights. In the midst of the difficult circumstances, they are overwhelmed by their anxiety amid the tough times. However, he assured them that they would leave Bucharest quickly. PM Narendra Modi ji and the entire nation of India have their backs! ", Scindia said on Koo, a social media site.

Operation Ganga was launched by India to evacuate its citizens. The Indian nationals will be evacuated by 26 planes operated by the Union government over the following three days. A total of 18,000 students are estimated to be stranded in the war-torn Ukraine.

Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Singhla stated on Tuesday that 12,000 Indians have been evacuated from Ukraine so far, accounting for 60% of the country's overall population in the war-torn country.
