Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha has filed a petition in the Rouse Avenue court seeking specific amenities during her judicial custody in Tihar Jail. The plea, made in accordance with the court's March 26, 2024 order, requests provisions for home-cooked food, mattresses, spectacles, and personal items like a japa mala.
The application highlights the alleged non-compliance with the court's directive by Tihar Jail authorities, as none of the specified articles were provided to Kavitha upon her confinement. Notably, the Special Judge Kaveri Baweja has taken cognizance of the grievance and has summoned a response from Tihar Jail authorities, scheduling a hearing for March 30, 2024. Kavitha's legal representation, led by Advocate Nitesh Rana along with Mohit Rao and Deepak Nagar, has been actively pursuing her case. Kavitha, a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) in Telangana, was remanded to judicial custody on April 9, 2024, in connection with a money laundering case linked to the Delhi excise policy.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had arrested Kavitha on March 15, 2024, in relation to the Delhi Liquor Policy Scam. The investigation alleges her involvement in a conspiracy with senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, to manipulate the Delhi Excise policy for monetary gain. The ED has conducted extensive searches and arrests across multiple locations, uncovering proceeds of crime amounting to Rs. 128.79 crore and filing multiple complaints and chargesheets in the case.
The probe, initiated by the CBI on the recommendation of the Delhi Lieutenant Governor, identified irregularities in the modification of the excise policy, undue favors extended to license holders, and fraudulent activities leading to losses to the exchequer. The ED and CBI allege that the accused diverted illegal gains and manipulated records to evade detection. As legal proceedings continue, K Kavitha's plea for basic amenities in judicial custody underscores the ongoing developments in the case and the pursuit of justice amidst allegations of financial misconduct and corruption.
