Lucknow: There is such a police station in Uttar Pradesh where, till date, no officer has dared sit on the chair of the police station. In fact, in a police station in Varanasi, Baba Kaal Bhairav has been sitting on the chair of the police station for the past several years. The officers sit next to him with a chair. The in-charge of Kotwali police station, located in Vishweshwarganj, Varanasi, says that this tradition has been going on for the past several years. When any police officer comes here on duty, he does not sit on his chair.
Kotwal Baba Kaal Bhairav of Kashi always sits on the chair of Kotwal. It is a popular belief that Baba himself keeps an eye on the people coming and going, and for this reason, Bhairav Baba is also called Kotwal of Kashi. Here, Bhairav Baba is so important that even the police do not start any work without worshipping him. It is believed that Baba Vishwanath himself has given the responsibility of accounting for the entire city of Kashi to Kaal Bhairav Baba. In fact, no one can enter the city without Baba's permission.
A constable posted in this police station for the last 18 years says that he has not yet seen any police officer sitting in his chair. All the officers sit with a chair next to them. However, there is no clear mention of when or who started this tradition. People believe that this tradition is many centuries old. In the year 1715, Bajirao Peshwa got the Kal Bhairav temple constructed here. Every big administrative and police officer who comes here first takes darshan of Bhairav Baba and takes his blessings.
