As an astronaut, Kalpana Chawla, who measured the heights of space, made her identity globally with her successes. February 1 was an unfortunate day when we lost this great daughter of the country. Her spacecraft had succumbed to an incident before landing. There was a strange coincidence of 16 in her space journey. She was born on 17th March 1962, but the official birth date was on 1st July 1961, born on March 17, 1962, at Karnal, Banarasi Lal Chawla and Maa Sanjayoti were the youngest among their four brothers and sisters. The Education of her was in Tagore Bal Niketan, Karnal. When she arrived in the eighth class, she expressed her desire to become an engineer from her father. The father wanted to make her a doctor or a teacher.

Family members say that since childhood, imagination was interested in space and astronomical changes. She often told her father how these spacecraft fly in the sky? Can I also fly? Father Banarasi Lal used to laugh at her. she learned karate in her college time. she also played badminton and participated in the races. she went to the United States in 1982 to receive a Master's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas. She had a commercial pilot license for a seaplane, multi-engine airplane, and glider. she was also a physician flight instructor for gliders and airplanes.

In 1995, Kalpana joined NASA as an astronaut and was selected for her maiden flight in 1998. The special thing was that she was the first Indian woman to fly in space. Earlier, Rakesh Sharma flew from the Soviet spacecraft in 1984. Kalpana traveled 1.04 million miles in its first mission to pass 252 earth orbits and 360 hours in space. flying made her first space journey at the age of 41 years which proved to be the last. Her words came true in which she said "I was made for space. Every moment is for space and will die for that."
