Actor Kamal Haasan, leader of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party, announced on Saturday that his party would not be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Instead, they pledged their full support to the ruling DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu. This decision comes after Haasan and DMK President M K Stalin finalized an agreement at the DMK headquarters in Chennai.

Haasan emphasized that their decision to join the alliance was not driven by a desire for political positions but rather by a commitment to the welfare of the nation. He reiterated that MNM would extend all cooperation to the alliance.

Following the agreement, MNM will actively participate in campaign-related activities across the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu and the single seat in Puducherry, as outlined in the understanding between the two parties.

This move marks a shift for MNM, which previously contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections independently but failed to secure any seats. However, with one seat secured for the Rajya Sabha in the 2025 polls, MNM has opted to throw its weight behind the DMK-led alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
