Bangalore: Karnataka's Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Monday that a hydropower project will be built along the National Highways from Kittur to Belagavi.

The idea proposes channelling rainwater along National Highways and constructing miniature water bodies to generate electricity.

Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, laid the foundation stones for two National Highway projects in Karnataka's Belagavi on Monday, totaling 238 km and costing Rs 3,972 crore. Gadkari said the projects will improve interstate road connectivity from Karnataka to Maharashtra and Goa.

Basavaraj Bommai, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi were also in present. Chief Minister Bommai, speaking at the event, said that implementing the Jal Shakti project along all of the state's roadways would bring a new dimension to growth. Water running over the National Highways will be used to create electricity for the project. He urged Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to complete the Ring Road in Belagavi and other cities in the state as soon as possible.

The State government, according to Bommai, will give GST exemption for the development of highways, ring roads, and land acquisition for the projects. "For the projects, we would ensure complete cooperation," he stated.
