KOCHI : In a major finding, the Kerala High Court pointed out the evolving nature of relationships among today's young adults. This change in relationships has led to a growing number of rape allegations after the couples break up and marry others, it said.

"However, this doesn't always imply that one of the partners was compelled into having a sexual relationship on a false promise to marry," said Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas.

These observations were announced on Friday by the court, which also granted bail to attorney Navaneeth N. Nath, a Central Government panel lawyer in Kerala who was detained in connection with a sexual assault accusation brought against him by a colleague.

While granting bail with some restrictions, Justice Thomas stated that despite the seriousness of the alleged offences, the petitioner is not likely to elude prosecution and has no prior criminal history.

The allegation over Nath was that he had been in a relationship with his colleague, another lawyer, for more than 4 years but in the end, he decided to marry another woman. After learning this, the complainant allegedly visited Nath's fiancée at a hotel and attempted suicide by cutting her own veins.
Nath was detained last month after she explained to the authorities why she had taken the action. He later requested bail at the Kerala High Court.
