Dahi Handi, also known as Gopalkala, is a major festival associated with the leelas of Lord Krishna. Every year this festival is celebrated with great pomp on the day after Krishna Janmashtami. The main attraction of the celebration of Dahi Handi is filling curd in an earthen pot and hanging it on a rope and breaking that handi by a group of Govindas. Let's know when Dahi Handi will be celebrated this year in 2024 and what is the significance of this festival.

When will Dahi Handi 2024 be?

Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on 26 August 2024. The next day, i.e. on 27 August 2024, Dahi Handi will be celebrated. This festival, which is celebrated on the ninth day of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month, has special significance mainly in Gujarat and Maharashtra. However, now this festival has started being celebrated with great pomp all over India.

Why is Dahi Handi celebrated?

The tradition of Dahi Handi depicts the childhood pastimes of Lord Krishna. It is also called Gopalkala or Dahikala. It is believed in Hinduism that Lord Krishna used to go from house to house in his childhood and steal butter from people's pots. When the pot (handi) was hung at a high place, Kanha used to break it and steal the butter. Thus, the image of Lord Krishna as the butter thief is celebrated in the form of this festival.

It is believed that all the sorrows of the house where Kanha sets foot are removed. The purpose of organizing Dahi Handi is also that through the tradition of stealing butter in the house, all the sorrows are removed and happiness prevails.

History of Dahi Handi

According to mythology, in the Dwapar era, Lord Krishna used to steal butter and sugar candy with his friends during his childhood. The Gopis, fed up with this theft, used to hang the butter at a high place so that Krishna could not steal it. But the naughty Kanha, along with his friends, used to find a way to steal the butter. They used to share this butter with their friends with great gusto.

Remembering these childhood pastimes of Lord Krishna, Dahi Handi is celebrated. During this festival, a group of Govindas try to break the handi by forming a pyramid, just like Lord Krishna broke the pot of butter in his time. Dahi Handi is a religious and cultural festival, which brings alive the pastimes of Lord Krishna. Through this festival, people not only immerse themselves in the devotion of Lord Krishna, but also enjoy together. This festival of Dahi Handi is a symbol of the cultural diversity and religiosity of India, which is celebrated with great pomp every year.
