Himachal High Court has taken strict note on providing basic facilities in old age ashrams of the state. Apart from this, the bench of Chief Justice L Narayana Swamy and Justice Jyotsna Rewal Dua ordered the Member Secretary of District Legal Services Authority of Shimla, Kangra, Mandi, Kullu and Lahaul Spiti to inspect the old ashrams in their respective districts and two Present the report before the court within a week. Along with this, the court has ordered that while inspecting the old ashrams, write in the report whether the necessary steps have been taken to provide basic amenities in these old ashrams, the High Court expressed serious concern over the attitude of the state officials. On hearing, it was said that such a sensitive issue should not be adopted by the state government officials.

Along with this, the bench had ordered the state government to tell the court through affidavit about how old people are in Himachal Pradesh who need old age home. At the same time, the court had also ordered the state government what steps are being taken by the state government to build an old ashram in all the districts of the state. At the same time, during the hearing of the case, the Advocate General of the state told the court that seven old ashrams are fully functioning in the five districts of the state.

A proposal can be sent to the Central Government about the opening of seven other old ashrams by the state government soon. With this, the court was told that according to the data released by United Nations Population Fund (India) and census in 2011, the state is the fourth state in the country in the category of highest senior citizen. The court was told that Himachal Pradesh has a population of 7 lakh persons, whose age is 60 years and above. Which is 10.2 percent of the total population of the state and is more than the national average of 8.6 percent.
