Mumbai: Two Naxalites were reportedly killed in an encounter on Sunday in Gadchiroli, a border area of Maharashtra. In the past 48 hours, security forces have so far killed eight Naxals in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. The Naxalites opened fire on security forces during a search operation in Gyarapatti village under Gadchiroli district on Sunday morning.

Two Naxals were killed in retaliation by the security forces while the rest escaped into dense forests. Earlier on Saturday, security forces in Chhattisgarh's Naxal-hit Sukma district had killed three Naxals in an encounter. Police officials in Sukma district had said that three Naxals were killed in Encounter near Mukram Nala near Thammetla village under the district.

Later, when security forces searched the spot, the bodies of three Naxals and several weapons including an INSAS rifle were recovered from the spot. The security forces had earlier killed two Naxals in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on Saturday morning and announced a reward of five lakh rupees each to the two Naxals. At present, the operation against Naxalites is going on in the entire region.
