Aizawl: One person has been arrested by the Mizoram Police for reportedly lit  a lighter in the middle of the road close to a tanker truck that killed 11 people in the Turial area of the state's Aizawl district.

Police said,  a Tank Lorry carrying 22,000 litres of petrol that was due to be delivered to Champhai at 4:35 pm on October 29 encountered an accident at Tuirial Airfield by turning turtle on the main road, splashing petrol over the road's surface. Around 5.50 pm, a large crowd had assembled to collect and store the petrol that had spilled when it suddenly caught fire, killing four individuals there and then.

After the injured people were immediately taken to separate hospitals for treatment, the police party and fire tenders arrived on the scene to put out the roaring fire.

"With the assistance of the FSL (Forensic Science Laboratory) Team, the Place of Occurrence (PO) was meticulously examined. At first glance, it appeared that the truck's driver's hasty and careless driving caused the accident, and when onlookers began collecting the petrol that had spilled, someone had apparently lit a lighter or was smoking, etc., which ignited the highly flammable gasoline, causing the very unfortunate and tragic accident that resulted in the loss of and severe burn injuries to valuable human lives "as per the police's statement.

The Bawngkawn Police launched an inquiry right away, and at midnight on November 1st, acting on information from a trustworthy source, they detained TBC Lallawmawma (28) of the Tuirial.

"During sustained interrogation, The accused admitted on November 2, 2022, at or around 11:00 a.m. He said that on that fateful day, he went to the Tank Lorry to collect the spilled petrol, but that due to the chaos and the large number of people involved in collecting the petrol, he was unable to obtain enough fuel. Furious, he stepped out into the middle of the road, ignited a lighter, and held up a plastic water bottle filled with petrol that he had collected and was carrying to see whether it would burn "police said.
