NEW DELHI: Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has announced plans to establish four new libraries in honor of the civil services aspirants who tragically died last month. On July 27, three UPSC candidates drowned in a library basement at a coaching center in Old Rajinder Nagar. Earlier, another student in Mukherjee Nagar died after touching an iron gate that was exposed to live wires.

The exact names and locations for these libraries are still under discussion. Mayor Oberoi's letter to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) commissioner suggested that the libraries could be set up in Rajendra Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Patel Nagar, and Ber Sarai—areas known for their concentration of coaching centers and student accommodations.

In her letter to MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar, Oberoi noted that the recent incidents highlighted a broader issue. Many students preparing for competitive exams in Delhi have expressed concerns about the lack of accessible public libraries, as private ones often come with high membership fees.

Oberoi proposed that the MCD create these libraries as a tribute to the deceased students, addressing the community's need for more public reading spaces. She recommended using funds from the Mayor's Discretionary Head of Account for this initiative and urged the MCD to assess the feasibility and identify suitable land for the libraries.

The official emphasized that while no action can replace the loss felt by the city, the new libraries aim to improve public resources for students.
