Tirupati: While holding a dharna in front of SV Medical College (SVMC) on Saturday, District General Secretary of AP Medical Contract Employees and Workers Union K Radha Krishna said that 85 contract workers working in SVMC are not getting the minimum wages prescribed by the government. . An indefinite protest will be held from October 20 against the attitude of the contracting agency which has not paid the salary for the last six months.

The state government has issued a GO to fix the minimum wage of Rs 16,000 for each employee and Rs 13,800 per month after all deductions. But, the contracting agency is paying them only Rs 7,200 per month, not paying the remaining Rs 6,600 to them. Even that amount was not being paid for the last six months due to which the workers are facing great hardship.

He tried to submit a memorandum to Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy during his recent visit to Tirupati, but was stopped by the police. He said that the contracting agency is forcibly robbing the workers about half of their monthly salary. In addition, the government announced setting up of a corporation for contract workers, but officials say that contract workers working as security guards and sweepers will not be covered under it.
