Shillong: The Modi government at the centre is trying to legitimize the people who migrated through the citizenship law. At the same time, Meghalaya seems to be opposing it. Meghalaya has issued an ordinance on Friday, under which people coming from outside in the state will be required to restrain for more than 24 hours. However, Meghalaya has kept the Central and State Government employees outside the purview of this rule.

The amendment to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 has been approved by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance Cabinet. To prevent illegal migrants from coming to Meghalaya, there was the talk of bringing an inner line permit system for a long time. Earlier this law was applicable only to the people living here. Actually, this permit is a document issued by the Central Government to Indians.

Under the Inner Line Permit system, it is necessary to stay in a protected area for a specified period of time. It is currently applicable in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. In Meghalaya, this permit will be given by the state government, not the centre. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tinsong has said that this amendment will come into force soon through the ordinance. It will be regularized in the next session.
