Shillong: After the announcement of the campaign against plastics by PM Modi, all the ministries of the government and various state governments have also come into action. Meghalaya, a small state in the northeast has also joined this campaign. The Central Pooja Committee of Meghalaya i.e. CPC has issued an advisory to all Durga Puja committees in the state, asking them to avoid using plastic during the festival. Officials said that more than 200 Durga Pujas are being organized across the state from October 4 to 8.

CPC President Naba Bhattacharjee said that on the call of CM Konrad Sangma, the committee will make efforts to stop the use of plastic during the upcoming Durga, Kali and Chhath Puja. Bhattacharjee said, 'Durga Puja committees have been asked to stop the use of plastic cups, plates and bottles and encourage the use of biodegradable items.

Also, they have also been urged to use environmentally friendly materials to decorate the pandals. Bhattacharjee said that he has requested the Shillong Municipal Board for a place for plastic collection in all the puja pandals. The chairman of the CPC said that the committee has decided to simply submerge the idols in the rivers from next year to prevent pollution.
