Srinagar: Claiming that 50 soldiers have died in the past 32 months in terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday demanded the sacking of DGP RR Swain, calling him a "political fixer." Mehbooba's criticism came a day after the J&K DGP accused political parties in the Valley of facilitating Pakistan's "infiltration" into civil society.

Seeking accountability for the recent spate of terror attacks on Army personnel, Mufti said, "Heads should have rolled by now... the DGP (RR Swain) should have been sacked by now." An Army captain and three soldiers were among five security personnel killed in an encounter with terrorists in Doda on Monday evening. This attack followed the ambush of an Army convoy in Kathua district, which resulted in the deaths of five Army personnel. "What has happened in Doda is highly condemnable. We lost our brave soldiers and officers in this attack... There is no accountability. The incumbent DGP is more busy fixing things politically. He is more into how to crush the PDP and how to harass the people," she stated.

Mufti's statement came in response to the DGP's claims that mainstream party leaders in Jammu and Kashmir were fostering leaders of terror networks for political gain. The DGP also asserted that Pakistan had infiltrated all significant aspects of civil society in the region. Continuing her criticism of the J&K top cop, Mufti accused him of treating local people as Pakistanis and alienating them. "Passport and antecedents' verification has been weaponized, UAPA is being invoked against more and more people, the business community is being harassed, our clerics are also not spared. They are being blackmailed. Bar Association people are being put behind bars," she claimed.

"We do not need a 'fixer' here, we need a DGP... No one worked on communal lines, but today it is done on communal lines. Employees are being sacked on charges of corruption. Most of them are from the majority community," she alleged. Mufti questioned the effectiveness of the DGP and the central government over the past six years. "Our jawans are being killed every day on the border, and there is no investigation on the same on the part of the government of India. They rather blame the mainstream parties," Mehbooba Mufti said. "The government of India has been ruling Jammu and Kashmir for the past six years, but what have they done? They put innocent people, be it a local or a journalist, in jail," she claimed.
