The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) recently issued a circular stating that the production, sale and use of firecrackers other than green ones is prohibited in the city. Import, sale and distribution of these firecrackers is a punishable offence. The civic body said only green crackers are allowed after the Supreme Court order. However many stalls are selling the non-green variety. Buyers of NTR Stadium and Indira Park allege that green crackers are missing at stalls across the city. Even the government-certified Hyderabad Agricultural Cooperative Federation (HACA) is selling non-green crackers. This time the awareness of green crackers is more among the people as compared to the previous years. However, officials said the civic body along with the police have formed teams in circles and areas to eliminate the sale and use of regular firecrackers.
