''Over 6.76 lakh Indians gave up Indian citizenship in 5 years'' Says Nityanand Rai

New Delhi: The Lok Sabha announced on Tuesday that over 6 lakh Indians had given up their citizenship in the previous five years during the present winter session of Parliament. Nityanand Rai, Union Minister of State for Home, told the Lok Sabha that over 6 lakh persons had given up their Indian citizenship in the previous five years.

He also stated that, according to data from the Ministry of External Affairs, there are 1,33,83,718 Indian people residing overseas. In response to a written inquiry, the Union Minister stated that 1,33,049 Indians gave up citizenship in 2017, and 1,34,561 Indians gave up citizenship in 2018. According to the Union Minister, 1,44,017 Indians gave up their citizenship in 2019, 85,248 in 2020, and 1,11,287 persons have given up their citizenship this year till September 30, 2021.
