The railways have already circulated a notice to its caterers and vendors commanding them not to use the banned cutlery. The IRCTC has also planned to provide plastic bottle crushers at various stations to check the disposable items including plastic cups, bottles, paper plates etc.

The ban has been executed the Shiv Sena youth leader Aaditya Thackeray and the initiative is being promoted by the wife of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Amruta Fadnavis belonging to the BJP.

According to reports, out of all the garbage generated in Mumbai every year, plastic constitutes more than 3% of it. Most of the waste is not disposed in a suitable manner and hence leads to clogging of the drainage system. It is often eaten up by the cattle and at times is also disposed in the sea.
