When Nathuram Vinayak Godse, who was considered the ultimate follower of Mahatma Gandhi, fired three bullets on Mahatma Gandhi, the whole country was filled with hatred towards Nathuram, but he did not run away and was arrested. After which he was taken to the court where Nathuram accepted his conviction, as well as the reason for killing Mahatma Gandhi in the court.

In the court, Nathuram said, "I have read and heard seriously what Veer Savarkar and Gandhiji had written or said. To my mind, nothing has influenced the thought and work of the Indian people as much as they have done during the last 30 years". Nathuram further said, "After reading and thinking about them, I was convinced that my first responsibility was for Hindutva and Hindus, but when Gandhi, who inspired ideas for 32 years, kept his last fast in favour of Muslims, It was concluded that Gandhi's existence should be ended immediately."

Nathuram accused Mahatma Gandhi in the court that the partition of the country was possible only because of Mahatma Gandhi's consent. He also alleged that he was in favour of the Muslims for the last hunger strike organized by Mahatma Gandhi to allocate money to the Muslims there after becoming Pakistan. This ideology left a deep impact on Nathuram's mind and he killed the Mahatma. However, Nathuram Godse said in the court that I did not kill Mahatma Gandhi but slaughter him.
