National Statistics Day is an annual event being observed on June 29. The Government has been celebrating the Statistics Day, to popularise the use of Statistics in daily life and sensitise the public as to how Statistics helps in shaping and framing policies. The day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Late Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, on 29th June, in recognition of his invaluable contribution in establishing the National Statistical System.

The theme of Statistics Day, 2021 is Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)- 2 (End Hunger, Achieve Food Security and Improved Nutrition and Promote Sustainable Agriculture).

The legendary scientist was born in Kolkata on June 29, 1893. This year’s National Statistics Day celebration marks the 128th birth anniversary of the Professor. He was the founder of the Indian Statistical Sciences (1931). Professor was well-known for his several extraordinary contributions to statistics including Mahalanobis Distance, large-scale sample surveys, besides his invention of a statistical method called ‘Fractile Graphical Analysis’.

On this occasion, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI)  also recognizes the outstanding contribution for high-quality research work in the field of applied and theoretical statistics benefiting the official statistical system. As per reports, this year, the winners of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis National Award in Official Statistics, 2021 and Prof C. R. Rao National Award for Young Statistician, 2021 will be announced during the event.
