Neerja Bhanot was the attendant Neerja of Pan Am flight on 5 September 1986. At that time the tickets were all booked and people were boarding the plane from Mumbai to America. Four terrorists hijacked the aircraft in Karachi, Pakistan. Their attempt was to target Americans. When the Pan Am flight-73 was hijacked in Karachi, the aircraft had a total of 380 passengers. During that time the hijackers wanted to take the plane to Israel and they wanted a building to be crashed. When the terrorists boarded the plane in Karachi, they pulled Neerja by the hair at the entrance to welcome the passengers. As soon as Neerja realized the danger, she immediately informed the cockpit crew of the aircraft through 'hijack code' on the intercom. After that, the cockpit crew escaped immediately from the emergency gate of the cockpit. For nearly 17 hours, Neerja and other crew members made every effort to save the passengers. During that time, a total of 41 Americans were present in the aircraft, out of which two were killed by hijackers.
The hijackers then asked Neerja to 'submit the passports of all the passengers so that the Americans could be identified. But Neerja very cleverly hid all passports. At the same time, both the pilot and the co-pilot got information about the hijack and they cleverly escaped. Neerja was left alone who saved the lives of others till the very end. It is said that she lost her life in this accident but she saved the passengers. Neerja's birthday is on September 7 and a few hours before her 23rd birthday, terrorists sacked her with bullets.
