Aerospace company Northrop Grumman Corporation named its launching Cygnus spacecraft after Indian-origin astronaut Kalpana Chawla. According to the information received, this spacecraft is going to be dropped in the International Space Station. NASA has given information about this through the Facebook page. Kalpana Chawla was the first female astronaut of Indian origin to go in space, but the whole world was saddened by her painful death and six companions in an accident in a spacecraft in 2003.

Talking about Kalpana Chawla, she was born on 17 March 1962 in Karnal, Haryana. She was the youngest of four siblings and is said to be called 'Montu'. She had her early education at Tagore Bal Niketan in Karnal and had a dream to become Astronaut since childhood. To fulfil her dream, she completed her BTech in Aeronautical Engineering at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. She then moved to the US in 1982 with the aim of joining NASA. There she did her M.Tech in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas and then a doctorate from the University of Colorado.

After getting the degree, Kalpana Chawla joined NASA in 1988. She is said to have been appointed to the NASA Research Center and after that, in March 1995 she joined NASA's Astronaut Corps. After joining, she started her first space mission on 19 November 1997. After that, she went on this journey with her team. Kalpana travelled 1.04 million miles and spent 372 hours in space during her first mission. She became the first Indian woman to reach space but her second space journey proved to be her last journey. While returning, she met with an accident and died when the spacecraft entered the earth's atmosphere.
