Serbia's legendary tennis player and 22-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic has managed to make his place in the quarter-finals of the French Open on Sunday, moving towards the 23rd Grand Slam title. Djokovic defeated Peru's Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 in the match played on Court Philippe Chatrier. Djokovic completely dominated his opponent in the match that lasted just one hour and 57 minutes and hit both parts of the court equally. He meanwhile played 35 winning shots to beat Huan in straight sets.
Djokovic has said after the victory that he got a lot of energy on the court, from the audience and also from himself. I enjoyed it. It turned out to be my best performance in the tournament so far. "It (form) has come back at the right time because I am coming in the second week and obviously playing another quarterfinal. The matches are going to be tough. There are big challenges ahead, but I love the way I am playing and the way I have started feeling, so I am ready for a new challenge."
In the quarterfinals, Djokovic will face Karen Khachanov of Russia, who is going to come in the top-eight after defeating Lorenzo Sonego of Italy. In the match played at Courtsuzne-Lenglen, 11th seed Khachanov defeated Sonego 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 to advance to the quarter-finals. Khachanov had earlier made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open 2022 and Australian Open 2023.
"After the second set was half over, I was thinking about what I was doing here," Khachanov said after the win. He was hitting the ball around the court, but I have decided to struggle. Sonego won the first set with a strong start to the bout, while Khachanov will also take time to regain momentum. Khachanov performed better in the second set to level the score at 1-1. In the third set, Sonego has also taken a 4-0 lead, but due to not being able to maintain the momentum, he has lagged behind 5-6.
Khachanov has also won this set in the tiebreaker taking advantage of this. Sonego could not recover from this and lost to Roland Garros after winning just one game in the fourth set. Meanwhile , Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Belgium's Elise Mertens 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the fourth round. The Russian will now face Karolina Mukova, who beat Russia's Elina Avanasyan 6-4, 6-3 in the pre-quarterfinals, for a place in the second Roland Garros semi-final.
