Bhubaneswar: A week after the tragic train accident in Odisha's Balasore, 82 bodies are yet to be identified. The families of the victims have also started returning home while waiting for DNA reports to identify the bodies. Official sources said that at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, where the bodies are kept, the authorities have not handed over the bodies to any family in the last 48 hours. Most of the bodies have decomposed.
AIIMS officials say that DNA profiling of the bodies has been completed. Blood samples of more than 50 relatives have also been collected, which will be sent to New Delhi in a day or two. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday (June 9) met AIIMS officials and discussed the identification of the bodies. "DNA matching is the only way to identify in a scientific manner and we are doing everything possible in this regard."
Sources in the state government have informed that a decision on the cremation of unclaimed bodies will be taken only after the DNA report comes. "Some people from Bihar and West Bengal are still coming to claim the bodies, we have asked them to identify the bodies from photographs. We are taking their blood samples for DNA testing, which will identify them."
