BHUBANESWAR: In Odisha, Omicron, a highly transmissible variant of SARS-COV-2, has taken the place of the Delta variant. The latest genome sequencing report from the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) in Bhubaneswar revealed this.

According to the data, Omicron was found in 235 of the 241 samples whose genomes were sequenced between January 27 and February 4, 2022, whereas Delta variant was found in only 6 samples.

It demonstrates that the Omicron variant is present in 98 percent of the total samples collected from Odisha's 18 districts. Six of the observed Omicron cases have been identified as BA.1, 12 as BA.1.1, and 217 as BA.2.

The Omicron BA.2 variant was identified in 13 of the 14 samples collected from the Angul district. Similarly, Omicron was identified in all 30 samples collected from the Cuttack district. Omicron was used to evaluate 45 of the 49 samples from the Khordha district.

Apart from Khurda, two non-Omicron cases have been reported in Nayagah and Puri districts. The Omicron variant was observed in all 47 samples from Ganjam district, 16 from Gajapati district, and 12 from Jagatsinghpur district.
