Chennai: DMK and its allies took out a rally in Chennai on Monday against the Citizenship Amendment Act and demanded the withdrawal of the Act. DMK President MK Stalin, Congress leader and former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, MDMK Chief Vaiko and leaders of the Left wing state unit determined the march from Egmore to Rajarathinam Stadium. During March, Stalin, Chidambaram and other veteran leaders carried placards in their hands.

Activists of the DMK and allies were raising slogans against the citizenship law. Police have said that extensive security arrangements were made, drones were deployed and 5,000 policemen were deployed in security duty in view of the rally. At the same time, the Madras High Court has ordered the police to make a video of it if the DMK takes out a proposed rally on Monday against the Revised Citizenship Act (CAA) despite not getting permission. The court said this interim late on Sunday night during the hearing of public interest petitions against the rally.

Earlier, the counsel for the Tamil Nadu government informed the court that the police did not allow the rally as the organizers did not show any commitment to take responsibility in the event of property damage or violence of any kind. A bench of Justices S. Vaidyanathan and Justice PT Asha refused to stop the rally and said that peaceful demonstrations in a democratic country cannot be stopped as it is the basis of democratic democracy.
