Kolkata: A 62-year-old Pakistani woman, Shaista Hanif, arrested along with her 11-year-old son at the Indo-Nepal border earlier this week, has been remanded to 7-day police custody by the Court of the Additional Judicial Magistrate in Siliguri. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) detained her while attempting to cross to the Indian side at Mechi bridge area in Darjeeling on the India-Nepal border.

Hanif, who arrived in Kathmandu from Jeddah on a tourist visa, disclosed during interrogation that it was her second attempt to enter India. She had previously tried near the water tank in Darjeeling but was thwarted and sent back by the SSB. Assisted by agents this time, she intended to meet her relatives in North 24 Parganas in return for payment.

Claiming to be originally from Silchar in Assam with the name Gouri Deb, she alleged she was lured to Pakistan by a group of men in Mumbai and wanted to return home. Fluent in Bangla, her story has raised questions, with security experts pointing out inconsistencies. Former NSG chief Dipanjan Chakraborty highlighted the unusual choice of entry through Bengal instead of more common points in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The police are verifying her claims and investigating her background.

Hanif's case echoes a similar incident in May when Pakistani national Seema Haider entered India with her children via Nepal, reportedly marrying an Indian man she met through the online game PUBG. While investigations continue, Haider resides in Greater Noida with her children and Indian husband.
