New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm wishes to Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura on their Statehood Day, acknowledging the rich culture, history, traditions, and achievements of the northeastern states.

"On Manipur’s Statehood Day, my best wishes to the people of the state. Manipur has made a strong contribution to India’s progress. We take pride in the culture and traditions of the state. I pray for the continued development of Manipur," PM Modi tweeted.

PM Modi also conveyed his wishes to Meghalaya on its Statehood Day, emphasizing it as an occasion to "celebrate the incredible culture" of the northeastern state and the accomplishments of its people.

"Happy Statehood Day to the people of Meghalaya! Today is an occasion to celebrate the incredible culture of Meghalaya and the achievements of the people there. May Meghalaya scale new heights of progress in the times to come," his post on X read.

Praising Tripura, which is also observing its Statehood Day, the Prime Minister commended the state for its "unique history and rich heritage."

"Heartfelt wishes on Statehood Day to the people of Tripura. May this day celebrate the unique history and rich heritage of the state. Wishing prosperity and harmony to the people of Tripura," PM Modi tweeted.

All three northeastern states are commemorating their 52nd Statehood Day, achieved on January 21, 1972, with the enactment of the North-East Area (Re-organisation) Act 1971.

Manipur's Statehood Day unfolds amidst ongoing tension due to ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kukis. Normal life was disrupted across the state on Saturday during the first day of the 48-hour complete shutdown called by a Joint Action Committee (JAC) in response to the killing of a 26-year-old village volunteer on Wednesday (January 17).
