Guwahati: Two were killed after the Assam Police opened fire on local residents, allegedly during a protest against the eviction drive in Sipajhar in Assam on September 23. A case has been registered against Assam policemen and district officials of Darrang district after they allegedly killed two people in this incident. An FIR was registered by the family members of the deceased. On the basis of complaints lodged by family members of Moinul Haque (33) and Sheikh Farid (12), policemen and district officials have been booked for murder.

The complaints were filed on 6 and 7 October, two weeks after the violence during the eviction drive. Two were reportedly killed after Assam Police opened fire on local residents protesting the eviction. In his complaint, Ainuddin, a cousin of Haq, said that the victim was taking his belongings to another place as he was served a notice for the eviction drive. Ainuddin claims to have complained that during the eviction, police personnel opened fire on the crow without any reason.

Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the eviction drive at Gorukhuti in Darrang district was the beginning of a decisive battle to secure the state's land. He further said that this fight will continue till the government frees such lands from encroachers in all the districts. The Chief Minister said this in fact today in the meeting of BJP's organization district committees. "The party and the government will have to work together," he said.
