ILKAL: The Sri Vijay Mahantesh Ayurvedic Medical College in Ilkal (City in Bagalkot district in Karnataka)  has rescinded the directive it issued to students requiring them to see The Kerala Story. Keshav C. Das, the college's president, expressed regret for sending the circular.

Principal Dr. Das stated in a letter to Hungund Tahshildar Basavaraj Melawanki that the circular advising students of the May 24 half-day class suspension and directing them to go watch the movie in Srinivas talkies from noon to 3 p.m. was rescinded. As usual, classes were held. I apologise for putting the courses on hold and telling the pupils to watch the movie. I am aware that the cancellation of classes was illegal. I'm truly sorry, and I promise that this won't happen again.

According to the circular, there would be no admission fees for pupils to the screening. The Kerala Story was shown in Ilkal, but according to sources in the college, the students were not compelled to see it. Some people criticised the circular.

In a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, a group of authors and activists asked him to take action against the college. Asif Hunachigi, the leader of the student Islamic Organisation, sent letters of protest to the college, the Deputy Commissioner of Bagalkot, the Tahshildar of Hungund, and MLA Vijayanand Kashappanavar. Mr. Hunachigi claimed that films serve as propaganda tools and undermine social cohesion.

The director general and inspector general of police of Karnataka received a complaint from Bheemanagouda Paragonda, secretary of the Congress RTI and legal cell, regarding the circular.
