According to media reports, on August 5, the central government abolished the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and divided it into two union territories Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. Many leaders, including former chief ministers Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, were taken into custody as a precautionary measure. At present, the government says that restrictions cannot be relaxed simultaneously. It is slowly being relaxed.

On Tuesday, the Jammu and Kashmir administration released a former PDP MLA and a business leader from custody. After this, there are now 15 people left in precautionary custody in the MLA hostel. These include Ejaz Ahmad Mir, a former MLA from Vachi, South Kashmir, and business leader Shakeel Ahmad Kalander. On Sunday, 4 leaders were released from the MLA hostel. Kalinder is the former president of the Kashmir Federation Chamber of Industries. Those who were released on Sunday included 3 PDP and one National Conference leader. All these leaders have been going off since August 5, 2019. Prominent leaders who are still in custody include NC President Dr. Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and PDP President, former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and People's Conference leader Sajjad Gani. Action has also been taken against Farooq Abdullah on 17 December under the PSA.
