NEW DELHI: The Central government has given an in-principle nod to the 235-kilometer Nashik-Pune high-speed railway project. 

Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, said on Sunday, a state delegation made a presentation to Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of railways, and other top railroad officials. He said the proposal would create a rail connection between two significant Maharashtra cities.

According to Fadnavis, the comprehensive project report would be presented to the cabinet for approval. Fadnavis claimed that the train connection would foster growth in both towns and provide easy access between the industrial areas of Pune and Nashik. The rail project will be built with an estimated expenditure of Rs 16,039 crore by Maharashtra Railway Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), a 50:50 joint venture between Indian Railways and the Maharashtra government. With 24 stops and a speed of 200 km/h, the train route would cut the current journey time of five to six hours to two and traverse through the districts of Pune, Ahmednagar, and Nashik.

The Railway line will pass through 3 districts of Maharashtra viz: Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik - providing seamless connectivity to industrial zones of Pune and Nashik such as Alandi, Chakan, Khed, Manchar, Narayangaon, Sinnar and Satpur.

The rail line will generate revenues from multi-fold industries like automobile, machinery, electronics, pharmaceuticals, sugar mills and other agricultural activities around the project influence regions.

Passengers of varied travel purposes like tourism, education, agriculture and as well as business and daily shuttles will have sufficient facilities to connect with the rest of the country.
