Punjab govt allocates Rs 8 crore for social welfare

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government has allocated Rs 8 crore to various departments for social and humanitarian initiatives carried out by non-governmental organisations this fiscal year (NGOs).

Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua announced that requisite funds would be granted to NGOs on occasion through ministries for various tasks as he presided over the meeting of the top committee for giving financial help to NGOs.
He said that the apex committee has been working in the priority sectors such as education, social justice, vocational training, health, social security,  animal husbandry, rural development and children's nutrition programmes so that the works could be implemented effectively.

He said, out of the total of Rs 8 crore, Rs 3.96 crore had been set aside for social security, women's empowerment, and child development. Rs 2.50 crore had been set aside for animal husbandry. Rs 59 lakh had been set aside for health. Rs 44 lakh had been set aside for rural development and panchayat. Rs 40 lakh had been set aside for social justice.

The Chief Secretary further instructed to assess the effectiveness of the NGOs with a view to streamlining their operations in order to prevent overlap in the work carried out by various NGOs under various government programmes.

He emphasised the need for strong cooperation between their efforts and those of the departments in order to realise the goal of the targeted group of society's socioeconomic uplift.

Vikas Pratap, the Principal Secretary for Planning and Animal Husbandry, informed the Chief Secretary of the allocation of funds and provided specifics on how each department performed during the previous fiscal year.
