Laxminarayan temple in Amritsar ransacked, jewellery looted, also demolished idols

Chandigarh: A Hindu temple in the Amritsar district of Punjab has been reported to have been vandalised. This temple is present in Ajnala. The idols of the temple have been vandalised. Police are suspecting theft in the case. The case is dated Wednesday (December 22, 2021). According to reports, the demolition took place at Shri Laxmi Narayan Temple. Gold, decorative jewellery, bikes and some cash kept in the temple have also been looted. Temple priest Swami Satya Akash confirmed the incident. He said his room was locked from outside at night. After waking up at 5 a.m., he opened his room with the help of his neighbours. Then they went and came to know about the incident.

The priest told the media that, 'Not only has the goods been looted, but 2 idols have also been demolished. An iron chain and 2 locks were broken before entering the temple. After coming to the temple, they broke the glass of the holy place. From here they all went to the first floor.' Swami Akash has been working as a priest in this temple for 15 years, who has termed it as a conspiracy to defile the temple. In protest against the incident, Ajnala gaushala operator and Hindu leader Ashwani Kumar have given a two-day ultimatum to the police to arrest the accused. He has said that if the accused are not caught, Ajnala will be completely closed and they will commit suicide.

Punjab Police has registered an FIR in the incident at Ajnala police station. Action has been taken under sections 34, 295, 342, 380 and 457 of the IPC in the case. Police have set up an SIT to unearth the case. DSP Jasvir Singha said, "CCTV footage is being scanned. Surveillance and technical teams have been pressed into service. Preliminary investigation sparking theft of the case. The police will soon nab the accused.'' According to the report, SSP Amritsar Dehat Rakesh Kaushal has also termed it as a theft incident and ruled out a conspiracy to insult the shrine.
