PV Sindhu reaches Badminton quarter-finals in Indonesia Masters

Bali: PV Sindhu of India reached the quarter-finals of the 2021 Indonesia Masters badminton competition by defeating Clara Azurmendi of Spain in three sets here on Thursday. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist and World Champion, dropped the opening game but came back to win the next two to defeat Clara Azurmendi 17-21, 21-7, 21-12 in a 47-minute match at the BWF World Tour Super 750 event.

Clara, a 23-year-old Spaniard from Madrid who is now ranked 56th in the world, got off to a great start and caught Sindhu at 9-9 after the Indian had built a little lead from 2-2. The scores were tied at 14-14 before the Spanish player took a commanding lead by scoring four points in a row to win the game 21-17.

Sindhu dominated the second game, taking an early lead and building on it to go 15-4 ahead, scoring 10 points in a row. The 26-year-old from Hyderabad, who added a bronze medal to her silver from Rio de Janeiro in 2016, won the second game 21-7, capitalising on the first game point.

Sindhu was on top again in the decider, and after the opening exchanges, she stormed ahead to a 14-7 lead at one stage, winning five games in a row. She won the game and the match with a score of 21-12, capitalising on her superior performance against her youthful Spanish opponent.
