Heavy rain in corona raises difficulties, 9 people lose their lives

In Karnataka, nine persons have died and three others are missing so far due to heavy rains. Many coastal areas of the state, Malnad, and interior areas have been hit by the highest rainfall leading to flood-like situations and landslides. 31,360 people have been evacuated from low-lying areas while 22,417 persons are living in 237 relief camps opened by the Government.

As per the data shared by the same State Disaster Management Authority, 36,498 persons have been affected by the highest rainfall in 283 villages in 45 talukas. Out of the deaths since July 22, four persons have died in Uttar Kannada district, two in Belagavi and one each in Chikmanluru, Dharwad, and Kodagu. Landslides have occurred at seven places in Uttar Kannada, four in Chikmagalur, three in Kodagu, and one each in Shivamogga and Hassan districts. More than 2600 houses have been damaged and 78 animals have died in rain-related incidents.

Due to floods and rains, 58,961 hectares of crops, 1962 hectares of horticulture crops have been damaged. It has also destroyed 555 km of roads, more than 3500 electric poles, and 342 transformers. According to Karnataka Pradesh natural disaster management centre, the cities of Madhya, Uttarkannada, Shivamogga, Belagavi, Hassan, Chikmagalur, Dharwad, Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu received heavy to maximum rainfall on Saturday. Kudumlige in Tirthahalli taluk of Shivamogga received the highest rainfall of 355 mm.
