14 dead, several injured after 'Pandaal' collapses due to heavy storm in Rajasthan

Jaipur: In Barmer district of Rajasthan, 14 devotees were died when a pandal fell during a religious event on Sunday. At least 50 people were injured in the incident. Leaders across the country have expressed grief over the tragedy. The Rajasthan government has announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those killed in the incident and Rs 2 lakh to the injured.

Several leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have expressed condolences over the tragedy. The incident took place on Sunday when Ram Katha was walking on the campus of a school in Jasol Dham near Balotara town. It was only then that the pandal fell down on the devotees due to the darkness and rain. Hundreds of devotees could not get a chance to get out and they were buried down. Balotara is a town in the bordering Barmer district.

Storyteller Murlidhar Maharaj was narrating the Rama Katha, during which time the rain and thunderstorms started. The blind was so strong that the whole tent began to fly in the air. The narrator had warned people to get out, but within seconds the whole tent came down. Hundreds of devotees were buried down. According to eyewitnesses, electric currents also ran into the iron poles of the tent, but the locals rescued the injured and rushed them to the hospital.
