The history of Republic Day is very interesting. The constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 to become an independent republic and to establish the rule of law in the country and was implemented with a democratic government system on 26 January 1950. In December 1929, a Congress session was held in Lahore under the chairmanship of Pandit Javarhalal Nehru. Passing the resolution in this session, it was announced that if India was not given Dominion status till 26 January 1930 by the British Government, India would be declared a completely independent country.

Till 26 January 1930 when the British Government did nothing, then on that day Congress declared the determination of complete independence of India and started its active movement. From that day until the attainment of independence in 1947, 26 January was celebrated as Republic Day. After this, on 15 August 1947, Independence Day started being celebrated on this day after attaining actual independence. After India's independence, the Constituent Assembly was announced and it started its work from 9 December 1947. Members of the Constituent Assembly were elected by the elected members of the assemblies of the states of India.
