New Delhi: The Modi government at the Centre has chalked out a plan to file a review petition in the Supreme Court on the reservation of Obcsive Classes (OBC) in local elections. In a statement issued on Monday night, the Centre said political reservation should be provided to OBCs in local bodies and municipal corporations unless all states meet the norms laid down by the apex court.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment said, "The government is considering filing a review petition before the Hon'ble Supreme Court to approve political reservation of OBC in local bodies/municipal corporations." The ministry said it was considering the law ministry and Panchayati raj in this regard. Taking opinions from other stakeholders including parliamentary affairs and home ministries.

The Centre said this after the apex court ordered the Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh governments to scrap 27 per cent of reservations earmarked for OBC in local bodies. In a statement issued late on Monday night, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment said, "In this regard, states have been instructed to follow the reservation policy in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, following all the norms laid down by the Supreme Court for elections to local bodies."
