Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year in the memory of the brave sons of the country who sacrificed their lives while liberating the high peaks of Kargil from the occupation of Pakistan.  Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on July 26 to commemorate India's victory over Pakistan in the Kargil war in 1999.  At the time of the war, the Indian Army chased away the Pakistani intruders and managed to capture Tiger Hills and other outposts as part of "Operation Vijay."

The battle with the Pakistan Army continued for more than 60 days in Kargil in Ladakh and in the end, India won the war.  Every year, on this day, we are also paying tribute to the hundreds of Indian Army who were martyred in the war launched by Pakistan. Several programmes are also organized across the country to commemorate the contribution of the Indian Armed Forces.

History of the Kargil War: Since the Indo-Pak War of 1971, there have been many armed wars between the two countries. In 1998, nuclear tests were conducted by the two countries. The Lahore Declaration also promised a peaceful solution to the Kashmir issue, which the two countries signed in February 1999 to defuse the situation. Pakistani infiltration into Indian territory across the Line of Control has also been named operation Badr. Its purpose was to break the ties between Kashmir and Ladakh, forcing India to settle the Kashmir dispute.

The Government of India started 'Operation Vijay' in response and mobilised 2 lakh Indian Army for a long battle of about 2 months.  The war took place in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir between May and July 1999.  It is being said that general Pervez Musharraf, the head of the Pakistan army at that time, had also planned the war without informing the country's then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Intelligence inputs from local shepherds helped: Initially, Pakistan took over the Indian-controlled areas of Kashmir. In the second phase of the war, India responded by capturing the first strategic transport routes. The Indian Army was able to identify the points of the attack based on intelligence provided by local shepherds. In the last phase, the Indian Army, with the help of the Indian Air Force, concluded the war in the last week of July.

The Pakistan Army was also involved in the Kargil war. However, Pakistan has always denied this. But during and after the war, many such facts have come to the fore which were enough to prove that the Pakistan Army had helped the intruders. Reports say that Nawaz Sharif also travelled from the US to Washington for assistance. But at that time, then US President Bill Clinton refused to help Pakistan.
