Islamabad: During the holy month of Ramadan, Pakistan finds itself grappling with financial challenges while its neighbor Saudi Arabia extends a gesture of goodwill. As Pakistan appeals to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout package, Saudi Arabia has stepped in to support its Muslim brethren by gifting 100 tonnes of dates to aid in breaking their fasts.

Amidst Pakistan's efforts to secure financial assistance, Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir's visit to Saudi Arabia is perceived as a plea for support from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Reports suggest that Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif may also soon visit Saudi Arabia to request financial assistance. The joint statement released during this period underscores the enduring bond between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

Acknowledging the historical ties between the two nations, Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to Pakistan, emphasizing their mutual support. While Saudi Arabia has declined to offer charity, it has extended assistance to Pakistan by providing dates, a traditional way to break the fast during Ramadan.

In a statement, the Saudi Embassy in Islamabad expressed the kingdom's goodwill, stating, "As a gesture of goodwill, the Government of Saudi Arabia has approved the gift of 100 tons of dates for distribution among our respected brothers of Pakistan."

Saudi Arabia's gesture holds significance, considering its status as the second-largest producer of dates globally, producing 16 lakh tonnes annually. This act of generosity echoes the customs observed in Saudi Arabia and resonates with Muslims worldwide who traditionally break their fasts with dates during Ramadan.

Meanwhile, Pakistan's financial predicament continues, with the country seeking its 24th medium-term bailout package from the IMF to facilitate long-term structural reforms. The IMF has indicated that subject to approval by its Executive Board, the bailout package could be disbursed to Pakistan by the end of April 2024.
